I had to good fortune to see and hear the amazing Odetta in 1978 at an outdoor folk festival in Massachusetts. She was able to fill a mountain valley with that voice and spirit of hers. It still lives.

I heard Odetta's voice on my parent's folk records as a child and her power and spirit filled me and never left me. I wanted to sing like her. Well, I am not black and I am not Odetta, but I am now singing with the power of Spirit in the canyons, in sweatlodges, and anywhere else I can - even while substitute teaching. I've been known to bust out with a blues riff when I need to get kids' attention. I owe a debt of thanks to Odetta for showing me like none other has that we can rock the world with our soul. She lives on in my life. THANK YOU ODETTA!!! I know you are rockin' the heavens!
